WHAT IS A LIMITED GOVERNMENT?
I have heard many people say that they want a limited government. Many people claim to be Libertarians (party members) and other claim to be libertarians (believers but don’t belong to the party). Some people belong to the Constitution Party. And there are many others who believe they have the inside track on what limited government is. But I have never seen anyone write out what limited government is. That is the question that I am trying to answer in my books and on this blog.
History divides into two eras: BtC – Before the Constitution (1788) and AtC - After the Constitution. For tens of thousands of years humans knew only unlimited government. Those governments were unlimited monarchies, theocracies, aristocracies and the like. In 1788 humans created the first constitutional unlimited government. They thought they had created a limited government but, in truth, they didn’t know what a limited government was. To those Founding Fathers, voting for government, having three separate branches of government, having a federal system consolidating States and a National government were the pinnacle of limitations on government power.
We know today that they were wrong. Despite the Declaration of Independence and the Preamble to the Constitution, they continued the practice of slavery, women had very few rights, not all men could vote and more. Today, in 2018, we know a lot more about freedom. But we still don’t know much about how to create a practical government that limits government power only to the necessary and promotes individual freedom and responsibility. To this end, I am a Constitutionalist which means that I believe that through constitutional means, we can limit our government and create a better Social Contract for everyone. That means that your notions of limited government and my notions are different. And different from anyone else who believes we can have limited government. I hope we can come together on these pages and define limited government in preparation for the day that we can move away from our unlimited constitution towards a better one.
